Surgical Breast Biopsy Container
PathProof Surgical Specimen Container
Product Description
There is a better way. Using the PathProof™ surgical specimen container, the excised tissue is placed in the container, once and only once. There is no need to manipulate or transfer tissue outside of the leak-resistant, needle-proof container. No other device is as safe, effective and easy to use - with no more handling or transferring of tissue, in the O.R. or radiology, until the tissue is transported to pathology for final histologic analysis. PathProof™ is a specially designed container, made of a rigid plastic. There are only three components; the container, the alphanumeric (compression) grid and the leak-resistant cover. This grid (or platform) is designed to compress the surgical specimen within the container at the time of specimen radiography. It also has a series of radiopaque (seen under X-ray) grid lines that are marked alphanumerically: A,B,C,D,E on one side, and 1,2,3,4,5 on another. This alphanumeric system allows for exact coordinates of the target lesion to be visualized under X-ray. Furthermore, the grid platform is specially designed to allow for variable compression of the tissue specimen, as desired by the interpreting radiologist. The grid openings (“holes”) may also be (optionally) used for needle placement into the targeted mass, or calcifications. Upon placing the surgical specimen in the PathProof™ container, the grid is pushed down, compressing the tissue in preparation for the X-ray examination. This flattens out the tissue for the radiographic study, holding it if firmly in position. Such compression improves spatial resolution of the X-Ray image, allowing the radiologist to better confirm that the appropriate lesion is contained within the excised material. The radiologist will generally note the alphanumeric coordinates of the lesion and has the option of placing a needle through the grid, advancing the needle into the target lesion. This action serves as an additional aid to the pathologist, as they perform microscopic sectioning of the surgical material. Margins: If desired, the PathProof™ container may be filled with India ink for tissue staining and margin analysis, with no messy clean-up necessary. Storage: In the Pathology Department, PathProof™ may also be filled with formalin, or other preservative liquid, for fixation of the tissue. With grid removed, the container (with cover) also functions as a storage device for the tissue specimen. There is no need to transfer the tissue to any other storage container.
With the PathProof™ system, a human tissue specimen is handled only once - at the time it is initially placed into the container, generally in the O.R. There is no subsequent transferring or handling of the specimen (which may contain pieces of wire, needles, clips, or other sharp materials). There is no leakage or spillage of bodily fluids, as the 3 container is extremely leak-resistant. The tissue is held in compression and maintains this same compressed position for the X-ray study and subsequent (optional) needle localization procedure. There is no movement of the specimen in-between, which could move the needle or lesion. If performed, a localization needle is easily and safely placed, with no risk of injury to healthcare workers. There are no messy countertops, bloody gloves, or sheets of contaminated film to dispose of. By being more efficient for the O.R. nurse, surgical technologist and X-Ray technologist, PathProof™ saves time and money for the healthcare institution. PathProof ™… a better way.
